Armenia Competes in World Team Chess Championship

YEREVAN (Tert.am)–In the 7th round of the World Team Chess Championship held in the Turkish city of Bursa yesterday, Armenia played against the team having the highest ratings–Russia. After an unexpected defeat with Greece (1-3), a victory was necessary for Armenia to regain its position.
Armenia was near a victory when Vladimir Akopian beat Alexander Morozevich on the 2nd board (0-1).
However, Alexander Grischuk (Russia) and Levon Aronian (Armenia), playing on the first board, tied (0.5-0.5), as did Arman Pashikian and Vladimir Malakhov (0.5-0.5) playing on the fourth board. Thankfully, Gabriel Sargissian beat his opponent, Russia’s Evgeny Tomashevsky, on the third board (0-1), securing an overall tie between the Armenian and Russian teams in this round (2-2).
Armenia, with a total of 8 scores in the championship thus far, is currently in 4th place. Today, Armenia will play against the US team.
