Yerevan-Batumi Rail Trips to Start Daily
YEREVAN (RFE/RL), April 30–Starting May 30 the company South Caucasian Railway switches to the summer train schedule, according to which the Yerevan-Batumi trips be run daily.
A totally reconstructed express train named “Armenia,” consisting of eight cars, will make the journey along this route. According to Shaydullin this schedule will take effect a month earlier than had been planned.
Alongside this express train, the Yerevan-Batumi route will also be run by a simple passenger train, the ticket for which will cost much cheaper.
The summer train schedule also makes provisions for establishing daily rail runs for Yerevan-Gyumri, Yerevan-Ararat (twice a day) and Yerevan-Armavir (four times a day) routes.
“In fact this is a trolley car schedule,” the South Caucasian Railway general director Shevket Shaydullin said. “I officially announce that we fulfill all our obligations intended by the concession agreement. Due to the necessary technical and organizational activities today we are able to undertake any kind of rail transportation.”
According to Shaydullin the company plans to invest 13 billion dram for updating and modernizing the assets, out of which 12 billion dram will be used to develop the infrastructures and one billion for the improvement of railway vehicles.
Investments are also made to improve the stations. About 100 million dram is planned to be invested for the reconstruction of Yerevan Station.
