YEREVAN (Novosti Armenia), March 12– On Thursday, the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) recognized the Armenian Genocide, according to Armenian TV company “Yerkir Media.”

“With 131 ayes and 130 nays the Parliament adopted the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide,” Yerkir Media reported.

According to RIA Novosti, the decision, taken on the proposal of the red-green opposition, was unexpected for the government. The bourgeois parties as a whole did not support the resolution. However, some deputies of bourgeois parties cast votes for it, which contributed to the adoption of the resolution.

The Armenian Genocide is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. Turkey continues to reject the charge of mass depopulation of about 1.5 million of Armenians during the the years of World War I. The Armenian Genocide has been recognized by many countries, like Uruguay, Russia, France, Lithuania, the Lower Chamber of Italy and the majority of US states.
