Armenia will Have Enough Amount of Wheat Armenia Will Have Enough Wheat Despite ShortageBy Adonia Agayan

YEREVAN, August 10 — Samvel Galstyan, Armenian Deputy Minister of Agriculture, said that Armenia will be provided with enough amounts of wheat. Nevertheless, Armenia can’t stand apart from the situation that has emerged on the world wheat market, including the set prices.

“The Government of Armenia and Armenia’s Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian personally assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and other structures to register the volume of the imported wheat reserves in Armenia as well as the volume of the available flour and the expected harvest,” Galstyan said.

Galstyan also noted that due to the imports and internal opportunities there won’t be problems concerning wheat until May 2011, and until next year’s harvest corresponding measures will be taken. At the same time discussions with the representatives of the Russian Federation will be held since wheat is imported mainly from Russia.

He highlighted that every year 650,000-720,000 tons of wheat is being used in Armenia, among them only 435,000-450,000 tons are used for food purposes. According to him, the deficit of the internal production is being supplemented by the volume of imports, which amounted to 380,000-420,000 tons during the last five years.

The wheat harvest in Armenia is expected to yield 168,000-175,000 tons this year, which speaks of the necessity for imports.

Galstyan also said that half of the harvest has already been gathered and about 190,000 tons of wheat has been imported.
