YEREVAN (ARKA), February 9—Paylak Yailoyan, director of Yerevan’s metropolitan subway system, said last Friday construction of a new station to be located in the city’s Achapnyak district will kick off in 2011.

He said the construction will be backed by a loan from the Asian Development Bank and a government allocation. Talks with the bank were underway.

Yailoyan also said that the subway train cars, which have been used for over 30 years, will be repaired in 2010.

Last year the Yerevan subway transported 20 million people, up from 19 million in 2008.

“Our citizens have realized the advantage of subway safety, cleanliness and accuracy,” he said.

The Yerevan Metro was launched in 1981. It runs on a single 13.4 km (8.37 miles) line and currently services 10 stations.
